How To Thicken 4C Hair

Let’s talk about how to thicken 4C hair.

Because, look:

One of the first things that I’ve noticed about natural hair vloggers and gurus is how big their hair is.

I love seeing kinky-curly girls and guys flaunt their big, beautiful afros and twistout after using products for defined 4c curls; it almost always stops me in my tracks.

But then I wonder, “How can I get my hair to be as thick and beautiful as theirs?”

Well, based on personal experience and years of research on caring for type 4C hair, I was able to find out how to get the same volume and beauty that they have.

So let NHP break down some of the tips, products and regimen tricks for you.

Monthly Routine: How To Thicken 4C Hair

Having an organized, monthly routine for how to thicken 4C hair is one of the first things that you need to do. Though it may seem obsessive, a monthly routine ensures that you’re doing a thorough analysis of your hair and helps you to see your progress.

Choose a day to perform your size checks. This will be a special day that you’ll set aside to actually prove to yourself that your hair is thickening.

People with type 4 hair have believed that they couldn’t really grow it long for decades. But today we see that this simply isn’t true.

We know that our hair grows 1-2 inches a month, just like everyone else, it just might be a little difficult to tell due to shrinkage.

But a size check will also confirm that the products and methods that you’re using are actually working.

Trim your hair as needed. Though it might sound like this has nothing to do with tips on how to thicken 4c hair, it actually has everything to do with thickness.

Discarding dead pieces of hair aid in moisture retention, and you can’t have thick hair without hydration.

Now, I don’t want you to think that you have to trim your hair once a month.

You’re simply checking once a month if your hair needs a trim. If your ends feel dead, split, or brittle then trim them. If your ends feel great, then leave them alone for another month.

Weekly Routine: How To Thicken 4C Hair

Cleanse your hair regularly. The scalp is a big contributor to factor in on how thick your hair grows, so it’s important to treat it right.

That means that you need to make sure that your scalp is properly cleansed once a week of dirt and grime that might clog your pores.

Use oils that promote thickening 4C hair. There are so many great oils out there that promote thickening 4C hair. One of the most famous of those oils is Jamaican black castor oil.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a natural hair honey who hasn't tried this 4C hair thickening growth oil at least once. Not all know how to use it correctly for the best results though.

Besides that, there are plenty of lighter oils that are excellent for hair growth and helping with 4C hair thickening.

And that’s just a few of them. Continue to explore the wonderful world of 4C hair care and find an oil that fits you.

Use protective styles to minimize 4C Hair manipulation. Whether it's summertime or winter, there is never a bad time to use a protective style.

Protective styles keep you from manipulating your hair too long and can stay in your hair for up to a month (depending on what you get). One of my favorite styles is the crown braid.

My crown braids typically last two days if I wrap it. After the style is done, I always try to moisturize my 4C hair well since I haven’t been able to touch it in a few days.

Finger detangle 4C hair more often than combing to detangle. Fingers are significantly gentler than combs. With combs, you have the propensity to pull and yank on your hair rather than using your fingers.

Whereas finger detangling is great for sensing where your little kinks, coils, and knots are in your 4C hair.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love my comb. I use it in the shower and on days when I’m in a rush, but I know that if I really want to love on my curls I need to use my fingers.
