Soooo... What are the different types of twists, you ask?

Many of our readers wonder about this, it seems like there are a million different twist hairstyle types, and to be honest...

...there are more styles than we can count and most are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! 

Here is a list of the most popular twist hairstyles that you'll see on the street or fashion model runway...

TWO-STRAND TWISTS LOCS

Two-strand twists (sometimes called "two strand twist locs") are a protective hairstyle that you create by taking two sections of hair and wrapping them around each other continuously down to the ends.

2-strand twist hairstyles can either be loose or tight, depending on how taut you hold them while styling and how snugly you wind them together. Two-strand twists can be thin, medium-thickness, or chunky.

They can be many or few, you can have twists all over your head or one on each side of your head, there are tons of options.

Many women have completely natural, “ALL their hurr” natural twist hairstyles. Others have extension hair. 

Speaking of extension hair...

Two-strand twist hairstyles using hair extensions have different names, depending on how chunky or thin the twists are and the kind of synthetic hair that is used to add length and volume.

For example:

Havana twists: These twist hairstyles with extensions are usually worn chunky and long.

Marley twists: These twist hairstyles with extensions are similar to Havana twists but use more expensive faux hair that's lighter weight and more springy.

'Two-strand twists are very simple and work for all hair textures, kinky, coily, curly or wavy.

Nubian twists: These twist hairstyles with extensions use short synthetic kinky hair for a springy look.

FLAT TWISTS

Flat twists are when you do a 2-strand twist but keep the twisted unit adhered very close to the scalp, picking up a small section of the hair as you go, tying it in, in a similar way to how a cornrow or French plait twist black hairstyle is installed.

FINGER TWISTS

Finger twist hairstyles happen when you take one section of hair and wind it around itself in the direction that hair naturally turns in.

These are also sometimes called one-strand twists, and you can do them all over your head of hair. They're easy twist hairstyles for natural hair.

Many naturals do finger twists when their hair is damp so that it’s easier, then the twists can either be worn as they are, or separated into smaller twirls and curls once they've dried.

THREE-STRAND TWISTS

Three-strand twists are when you (or your stylist) takes 3 sections of hair strands, in a similar way to how you would prepare for a braid, but the twist technique is different from braiding. These are not always very easy twist hairstyles for natural hair.

TWIST OUTS

A twist out is when you do 2 or three-strand twists while the hair is damp, let them dry out completely either naturally or with the help of a gentle warm diffuser. Then, carefully unravel with your fingertips coated in a little lightweight styling serum, to reveal a beautiful kinky-curl pattern.

When you start, don’t be generic with your sectioning, you have an opportunity to CREAT something!

 Think about how you want to frame the face because this will set the style up for when you're taking it out.

After unraveling, you can then separate each of the twists to make more small sections of defined kinks and curls! While you flaunt a good twistout you don’t have to worry so much about frizz because having a little bit of frizz to your hair's natural texture is a good thing.

 It helps to help add volume and energy to the style, giving the overall twistout hairstyle and look more personality.
